Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms with massive marketing potential. Its diverse user base and new features like Reels provide a wide range of opportunities for marketers. In 2020, HubSpot found that posts with 11 or more hashtags see better engagement than those with no hashtags. However, the most engaging posts are carousel posts.
1. Instagram Followers
With a total of more than 4.1 billion Instagram followers, Cristiano Ronaldo holds the top spot as the most followed account on the platform. Followed closely by Nike, National Geographic, and Starbucks. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Katy Perry also rank high on the list. Other popular accounts include Disney, Victoria’s Secret, 9GAG, and the NBA.
In terms of content type, Carousel posts receive the most likes and comments by far. According to a recent study by HubSpot, Carousel posts also receive a median of 70 comments, nearly doubling the number of comments for video posts.
In terms of geography, India has the largest Instagram audience, followed by Brazil, the United States, and China. Instagram’s audience is largely made up of young people, with over half of the platform’s users falling in the millennial and two-thirds in generation Z bracket. This makes Instagram a great place to reach younger audiences.
2. Impressions
Instagram’s impressions metric measures the number of times that a post or ad is seen by users. This metric differs from reach, which takes unique users into account.
Impressions are an important metric for understanding how your content is performing. The more impressions your posts and ads have, the more likely they are to appear in the feed of new followers and to convert on your website or other online channels.
To get your impressions, navigate to a specific post and select “View Insights” at the bottom of the screen. You can then see impressions under the “Reach” header.
According to a HubSpot report on the most popular Instagram accounts by sector, in North America, National Geographic and NBA are the most followed brands, with 9GAG and Marvel in close behind. In addition, the luxury brands of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Huda Beauty have a large following on the platform.
3. Engagement
While impressions can be a good indicator of your popularity on Instagram, engagement is typically defined as concrete interactions with your content. This includes likes, comments, DMs and mentions.
The most popular Instagram accounts have millions of followers, but they also receive a high level of engagement. This is why it’s important to find a balance between how many followers you gain per month and how much engagement you get on average.
Instagram Reels, a short-form video format similar to TikTok, have become increasingly popular on the platform. In fact, Reels are the second most common post type on Instagram alongside photo and Carousel posts. Popular Instagram Reels include a variety of topics, including tv shows, makeup tutorials and lifestyle tips. Celebrities and influencers are especially successful with this format. For example, YouTuber Khaby Lane has a large following for his droll takedowns of “life hacks” and everyday niggles.
HubSpot’s 2022 Instagram engagement report showed that North American business accounts with the highest average follower count belonged to the Home and Automobiles sector, followed by Publishers and Content and Apps. Interestingly, they also saw the lowest average engagement rates among all sectors.

When it comes to comments, it’s recommended that you start small and gradually increase the number of daily posts with comments until you reach the desired amount. Using more than 30 hashtags in a single comment can be penalized by Instagram, so it’s important to add them sparingly. Generally speaking, the more comments a post has, the more engagement it gets.
